Sephora coming back...but to Kohl's!?

Sephora Opens Soon sign at Kohl's - Optopolis

Sephora is set to return to Cheyenne, but it's coming to Kohl's this time! The new Sephora store is set to open later this month.

Previous events: Sephora, JCPenney, and early days at Kohl's

Back in 2006, JCPenney and Sephora teamed together in a partnership that would allow Sephora to begin opening cosmetic shops inside of JCPenney stores. The goal, as noted by NBC News, was to "erase [JCPenney's] image as a dowdy middle-market department store operator."

In Cheyenne, Sephora didn't open in JCPenney as soon as other locations opened. The Cheyenne Permits and Planning website includes permits submitted in mid to late 2017 which include a call for a Sephora to be built inside of JCPenney. The original Cheyenne Sephora was built just south of the JCPenney jewelry counter, taking a large portion of what used to be occupied by other products.

The partnership between the two brands was set to last until 2022, and while some locations like Fort Collins' Sephora closed due to JCPenney's bankruptcy and closing, Cheyenne's Sephora remained open until late 2022 when one could see that the Sephora had been barricaded off from being readily and easily visible.

Well over a year ago at this point, the old Cheyenne Sephora had been replaced by a JCPenney Beauty section that offers products similar to Sephora's. A worker shared that JCPenney Beauty has samples of many of the beauty products that one can try out as well.

Also in late 2022, Kohl's and Sephora announced plans to add Sephora to all Kohl's stores after previously introducing the concept in 2021. Currently, according to the Sephora at Kohl's locations list, various Kohl's stores in many cities across 45 states already include a Sephora store, and cities across three additional states including Cheyenne and Casper in Wyoming have a Sephora on the way.

A recent visit to Cheyenne's Kohl's store revealed signage indicating some kind of construction work was underway. It turns out that the construction work is for a new Sephora shop which will take the space recently used by Kohl's beauty department, and they submitted permits on February 7th, 2024 for the construction of the new Sephora.

The plan document indicates that the remodel consists of about 2,000 square feet of floor space within the sales floor; it confirms that the permit addresses the new Sephora beauty area within Kohl's. Some new lighting will be installed in addition to Sephora's signage and other aspects that will make up the Sephora.

This is the second official remodel that has happened in the beauty department since the Cheyenne Kohl's opened; the first (and minor) remodel of the beauty department took place in approximately 2015, when a different set of permits were submitted.

Late May, Grand opening of Cheyenne's Kohl's Sephora

According to a worker at the Cheyenne Kohl's, Sephora is set to have a grand opening on May 24th. Currently, the Cheyenne Kohl's location page doesn't display any further information about Sephora, but the Cheyenne Sephora location page does include this same grand opening information.

Cheyenne's Sephora will be the second Wyoming location to open as Casper's Sephora is set to have its grand opening two weeks prior to Cheyenne's Sephora.

When Sephora was in Cheyenne before, what did you think of their products? Are you excited to see them coming back again? On a side note, what do you think of JCPenney repurposing the Sephora space with their own beauty section? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
