JAX Outdoor Gear renovating Sears Cheyenne JAX Mercantile Co. is currently setting up to open it's store in Cheyenne Wyoming at the Frontier Mall. This is the first of it's stores in Wyoming, and this is in addition to six Colorado locations and one in Iowa, making Cheyenne's store the eighth location to open. A little bit of history on this location; Sears opened in this location on October 8, 1980, the year prior to the Frontier Mall opening. Roughly thirty eight years later in January of 2018, Sears closed permanently. In Halloween of the same year, Spirit Halloween opened in the Sears, which would end up being the first video I ever filmed for YouTube, and you can check it out above. If you haven't seen a JAX store before that's taken over another store, they seem to have a habit of using what is there, but then adding their own touch, which means you still can often tell what was there before looking at the facade. As American retail continues to fall down a cliff, cities still continue to find some way to build brand new shopping centers.   My video on YouTube (left) shows off the progression as of July 2019, and I discuss the major portion of the soon-to-be Pershing MarketPlace. I did, however leave a small amount of information out of this video, which will appear in today's article. History/Progression of this Shopping Center Originally, there wasn't much here. It started as a Taco Johns and a "mini big-box" store, which most recently was the location of both Z's Home Furnishings and Karousel Kids: Cheyenne Childrens' Store. The annual Delta Kappa Gamma book sale was held in this "mini big-box" store one year, and I believe this was also a Western-Style store at one time, based off of the sign that appears with Z's (right). It also had a house at the north east corner, which became abandoned and was torn down approximately 5 years ago.
