Even with the recent events between Maverik and Kum & Go, it appears Cheyenne is still set to get another Maverik gas station off of Campstool Road and I-80. Here's more details about Maverik, Kum & Go, and other recent events regarding the new station and Maverik as a whole.

A glimpse of Maverik's history and recent events...

Maverik is born

Maverik is a chain of convenience travel stations located throughout the western United States including many states in the region between Washington (to the north) and Arizona (to the south), and also between Oregon (to the west) and South Dakota (to the east).

It may surprise some that Maverik was originally founded in Afton, Wyoming according to Maverik's about page. Today, their headquarters are in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company was acquired by FJ Management (formerly known as Flying J Inc.) and has been part of FJ Management since December 2012 according to numerous sources including NATSO.

Expansion to Cheyenne

As far as is known here at Optopolis, Maverik's first Cheyenne location would be built at the intersection of Gardenia Dr and Yellowstone Rd; according to the property assessor, it was built in 2010.

They built a second Cheyenne location at the intersection of N College Dr and E Pershing Blvd that would open around September 2016, having a grand opening party on September 29th, 2016 as mentioned in one of their Facebook posts. A third one would be built at the intersection of S Greeley Hwy and W College Dr during roughly the same time frame, opening by January 2017 and having its grand opening party on January 19th, 2017 according to another one of their FaceBook posts.

Maverik looks at possible fourth location

In February 2023, Maverik was clearly entering the process of potentially building a fourth Maverik station along Campstool Rd between Venture Dr and Hutchins Dr; a "Board Approval" item was submitted under the Projects section of the Cheyenne City Planning website. It currently displays the status as "AP," and the city planning ArcGIS map displays the project item as "approved."

Acquisition of Kum & Go

At the end of April 2023, Maverik had announced it acquired Kum & Go which currently has two Cheyenne locations. This added a level of uncertainty here at Optopolis as to whether the new Maverik was still going to be built, hence the wait for this article. Initially, Maverik had said they'd continue operating the two brands separately, but since the time of acquiring Kum & Go, this has changed... and changed again.

Since the time of initially stating that only Kum & Go locations in four states will rebrand to Maverik, Maverik has taken quite an unexpected twist; Maverik now says that all remaining Kum & Go stations will be rebranded to Maverik, and the Kum & Go brand will be retiring--with the brand expected to disappear by 2025.

The first rebrand from Kum & Go to Maverik has already happened in Draper, Utah, with the new Maverik opening today, the time of posting this article, according to Maverik's Facebook page.

A fourth Maverik is still underway and here's the nitty gritty.

In late August 2023, a permit classed as a Plan Review had been submitted to the Cheyenne City Planning website, and the item notes that the gas station will be located at the address of 8100 Hutchins Dr. The Plan Review displays the status, "Approved."

The city planning ArcGIS map displays two items whose project numbers start with PUDC at the site of the soon-to-be Maverik. PUDC-23-49 Maverik is noted as created on 5/17/2023, and PUDC-23-194 Maverik Sign Variance has the most recent date, noted as created on 12/6/2023 (at this time, neither appear to have any documents available to view). PUDC-23-49 has been "approved," while the sign variance is still "under review."

Drawings contained within the Cheyenne City Planning website reveal that the new station is set to have fourteen fuel dispensers (seven in front of the convenience store, seven to the side of the convenience store), four parking lot access points for vehicles (two on Hutchins Dr, one on Trucker Rd, one on Campstool Rd), and a walkway that would allow pedestrian access from the neighboring hotel. The station is also set to include seventeen longer parking spots that could be used by larger vehicles such as semi trucks.

The drawings also indicate plans to include the Bonfire Grill, a common aspect of the Maverik stations that offers various food items throughout the day. The convenience store building is shown to be well over 5,000 square feet in size (the plans note an area of 5,951 square feet).

Where things stand currently, no building has begun on the station yet. The two Cheyenne Kum & Go stations are yet to be rebranded, but they are expected to rebrand within the next year or so (given the retirement of the brand coming by 2025). The new Maverik along Campstool and Hutchins isn't yet listed on the Maverik Grand Openings page.

It is one of the biggest mistakes that the Cheyenne City Council can do! As a former employee that worked for them I found the company seriously lack at all levels of management and responsibility to the community they serve! The last days of KumnGo will be the last days I visit these locations and I'll start going to LoafnJug
