Kum and Go to rebrand to Maverik (Wyoming)

Maverik acquired Kum & Go and announced that they would be retiring the entire Kum & Go brand by 2025. Utah's Kum & Go locations have already been converted, Colorado's are nearly done, and Wyoming's are now on the list.

Previous events with Maverik and Kum & Go

Back in 2022, one of Cheyenne's Kum & Go locations, located on East Lincolnway in Downtown Cheyenne, rebranded to hi MARKET. At the time, it wasn't clear if something may happen to Cheyenne's other two Kum & Go locations, located along Ridge Road (one on East Lincolnway, the other at Dell Range Boulevard).

In early 2023 prior to the Kum & Go acquisition, project items were submitted for a new Maverik along Campstool Road between Venture Drive and Hutchins Drive (also along I-80). This location is now in the process of being built, and it's not yet listed in the upcoming stores list on Maverik's website.

In April 2023, Kum & Go was acquired by Maverik. At first, it wasn't known what the plans were for the Kum & Go banner except that stores would continue (for the time being) operating under the existing banners. Soon, however, Maverik announced that the Kum & Go stores would rebrand; at first, they were only going to rebrand locations in four states, but they have since decided that they will be retiring the Kum & Go banner entirely by 2025.

The first rebrand happened in Draper, Utah. All the remaining Utah Kum & Go locations have already since been rebranded, and most of the Colorado locations have also already rebranded. With Colorado locations wrapping up their rebrand efforts, it's no surprise Wyoming is next on the list.

Some Kum & Go locations have recently closed in Wyoming, including one in Rock Springs, one in Laramie, and two others in Casper and Evansville. According to the K&G locator, there are nine Kum & Go locations left in Wyoming including locations in Buffalo (1), Cheyenne (2), Gillette (2), Rock Springs (3), and Saratoga (1). Compare this to Maverik who already has twenty nine locations in Wyoming including three in Cheyenne, two in Cody, and two in Evansville.

Maverik currently has three Cheyenne locations. Cheyenne's first Maverik of the 21st century (whose pumps are photo'd here) is on the corner of Yellowstone Road and Gardenia Drive.

Remaining Cheyenne's locations to close and rebrand

Maverik recently updated their "rebrand" page to start including Wyoming Kum & Go locations scheduled to close then later reopen under the Maverik banner including the two K&G locations in Cheyenne. In both cases, sign permit files in the city planning website indicate that any Kum & Go signage is expected to be swapped for Maverik signage, gas price signs are expected to be added to the canopy at each location, and the Bonfire Grill branding is also expected to be added to each location.

  • Kum & Go on Ridge Road at Dell Range Boulevard will close its kitchen on August 18th, close the store on August 25th at 6 PM, and reopen as Maverik on September 3rd at 6 AM. The self-standing and decorated "&" sign is set to be removed. One of the two "Go Fresh Market" signs will be swapped for a Maverik sign, while the other will be swapped for a Bonfire Grill sign.
  • Kum & Go on East Lincolnway at Ridge Road will close its kitchen on August 23rd. [UPDATE 08-20-2024: The store will also close on August 23rd. A worker informed Optopolis that the store is set to remain closed through August 28th.] Unlike the other location, two self-standing signs (one taller, one shorter) are expected to be refaced with Maverik branding.

YESCO LLC is noted as the contractor that will replace the signage. Additional information regarding signage changes to each location can be found in their respective sign permits. Additional changes that are likely to be made can be seen at other previously-rebranded Kum & Go locations, such as the former K&G in Draper, Utah.

This is one of two Kum & Go locations in Cheyenne that will be rebranded as Maverik and include the Bonfire Grill branding. Both K&G Cheyenne locations currently feature Kum & Go's "Go Fresh Market."

The rebrand page currently (as of time of writing) includes dates for four other Wyoming locations, one of two Gillette K&G stores and all three in Rock Springs. These four K&G stores are expected to be rebranded throughout the month of September. That leaves three other Kum & Go Wyoming locations, however, that still are yet to be announced to rebrand.

What about the other three Wyoming locations?

There are three of the nine Wyoming K&G locations not listed on Maverik's rebrand page; that includes one Gillette location (310 Skyline Drive) along with locations in Buffalo and Saratoga. If you kept up with Colorado's rebrand process, you'd know that more locations were added as time progressed; it appears the same is true of these three Wyoming Kum & Go locations.

An email from a customer service representative at Maverik states that these three locations are yet to be added to the Maverik website because they are still working on the process of rebranding. The representative went on to say that, once they start rebranding those stores, they will show up on the locations tab.

However--for what it's worth--all three locations are quite unique compared to most other Kum & Go locations that have been rebranded to Maverik. These three Wyoming locations occupy 200 to 600 fewer square feet of land compared to either of the two Cheyenne locations. They feature smaller buildings that appear to resemble former 7-Eleven store fronts; residents who remember 7-Eleven having locations in Cheyenne will likely agree.

This long-since-former Kum & Go on South Greeley Highway is also a former 7-Eleven. Cheyenne had at least one other former 7-Eleven-turned-Kum-&-Go located along Dell Range Boulevard; that location was demolished for the existing Ridge Road/Dell Range Boulevard Kum & Go. - Optopolis

For the time being, it's not clear to Optopolis which state is next on the list--that is, which state is next to be affected by the rebrand process once all the Wyoming locations have been refaced with Maverik branding. Wyoming is the third state, however, that will have its Kum & Go locations rebranded to Maverik.

Update 08/10: The rebrand page now lists all nine remaining Kum & Go locations in Wyoming. The dates for the three previously-not-listed-locations are now listed as follows as of August 10th:

  • Gillette 310 North Skyline Drive - Kitchen closes Sep 12, store closes Sep 13 at 6 PM, Maverik opens Sep 24 at 6 AM.
  • Buffalo 109 North Main Street - Kitchen closes Sep 14, store closes Sep 14 at 6 PM, Maverik opens Sep 24 at 6 AM.
  • Saratoga 312 South 1st Street - Kitchen closes NA, store closes NA at 6 PM, Maverik opens Oct 1 at 6 AM.

How do you feel about the Kum & Go banner going away? Do you think they should have kept the name, or is it time to drop the meme-worthy banner? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Update: 08/20/2024 at 11:31 PM MT to add new info on closing dates noted by the individual Lincolnway store. This does contradict previous info on the Maverik rebrand page.
