Hampton Inn being built at former Atlas Motel

The Atlas Motel has long since been demolished for a new Hampton Inn, and now in 2024, the new hotel is nearly built! Here's a touch on the history and where things are now.

Glimpse at the history of Atlas Motel

The Atlas Motel was located along W Lincolnway near the Hitching Post Inn and built in the 1920s; the Laramie County Property Assessor GIS map once noted that the buildings on the property had been built in approximately 1927 with the exception of a "Shed - Tool" that noted a build date of 1946.

In 2018, the motel closed up and was placed for sale, with for sale signage being placed on the huge standalone sign. By 2019, there was already talk of possibly replacing the motel with a new hotel or motel, especially after the land had been purchased.

The building sat mostly boarded up until early 2020 when the property was fenced off and the buildings were demolished. As of February 2020 just before demolition took place, it was already known that a new 5-story Hampton Inn would be built at the site of the former Atlas Motel. As of the start of April 2020, the buildings had been demolished.

The fencing remained up for a while after demolition, but the fencing eventually was taken down with no immediate sign of construction work happening soon. According to the Mayor's Minute from August 19, 2022, delays on the Hampton Inn were due to, "the owners are waiting for the cost to build to come down." (Side note: It's unclear here at Optopolis if the cost of materials including the lumber price surge were also the reason for delays on the soon-to-be Hitching Post Plaza.)

New Hampton Inn finally breaks ground, now nearly built

Over the next couple years, not much happened at the land of the then former and demolished Atlas Motel besides laying the foundation for the soon-to-be Hampton Inn. But in 2023, that would change; in June 2023, the framework of the building was actively starting to go up for the new hotel.

It took until October for two of the five stories to be built, but by mid-November 2023, the third and forth stories were in progress. By the start of December 2023, the fifth layer was actively underway. Finally at the end of December 2023, one could see that the fifth layer's framework was in place.

Although the building still has a ways to go before it is ready to operate, one can see that walling has even been going up on the building's exterior!

At this time, the Cheyenne Hampton Inn doesn't appear to be displayed in Hilton locator, although Hilton currently has two other hotels in Cheyenne (Home2 Suites and Tru, both located along W Fox Farm Rd). At this time, it is not known here at Optopolis what the expected date of completion will be on the new hotel.

What do you think of the things finally tangibly progressing in the area of the Hitching Post Inn? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

I have always been aware of the ongoing train traffic in the Union Pacific switchyards across the street from the W. Lincolnway hotels. Over 90 trains per day pass through Cheyenne day and night. The rumbling trains, banging of boxcars, train whistles when crossing Southwest Drive (near Westland Road) are loud and interrupt sleep. There has to be a better location for a new hotel.
