Madhouse BJJ opens tonight at Frontier Mall!

Madhouse signage has been installed on a space near JAX at Frontier Mall - Optopolis

Recently, a local jiu-jitsu studio named Madhouse Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been setting up shop in the Frontier Mall in a space near JAX Outdoor Gear and Jo-Ann. Tonight at 5 PM, they open.

A glimpse of the history

Space 95 at Frontier Mall

Throughout the last few months, Madhouse BJJ has been setting up in space 95 at the Frontier Mall. Most recently, this space was occupied by Asian Gift, but they relocated next door (nearer to JAX) to make way for the temporary Barnes & Noble that never came. (Barnes & Noble did reopen in Cheyenne, ultimately switching spots with Natural Grocers).

Comparing the mall map published in the Wyoming Tribune Eagle in 1981 to the present day mall map, space 95 was once assigned a much different number--space 77. The Frontier Mall Grand Opening page that appeared on March 17th and 18th of 1981 did not include a store located inside that space. It's unclear here at Optopolis at this time what the original tenant of that space was.

An archive on Wayback Machine from 2002 of Frontier Mall's website lists Natural Lights at the space, then numbered as space 96. As of 2009 when a Labelscar Blog Post was published, a store called Nature's Touch occupied what would soon become Asian Gift.

Barnes & Noble was set to combine this space and the former DEB to form a temporary store until they found a permanent space. Although permits were submitted to combine this space, this temporary store never opened. - Optopolis

On April 24th, Frontier Mall published an article that shared a list of new businesses that would be opening at the mall, including Madhouse Jui Jujitsu Studio. The article stated that Madhouse BJJ would be opening in early August. (All the other businesses listed including Compass Rose, Camp Kitchen, La Mekicana, Mobile Fix, and La Michoacana have since opened.)

Madhouse BJJ

Madhouse BJJ is a martial arts school that teaches the practice of jiu jitsu. They account for students of all ages as can be seen in a Facebook post from March 24th, 2024. Madhouse BJJ previously occupied a building at 2014 East 14th Street (near Logan Avenue), but they posted on March 20th that they had outgrown the space (now occupied by Ride and Seek Thrift) and were set to open at a new location on Cleveland Avenue near East Pershing Boulevard.

According to an article from Wyoming News Now posted on April 29th, 2022, Madhouse first opened in Cheyenne around the end of 2018/start of 2019; the article states that, at the time in April 2022, Madhouse opened 3 1/2 years ago (so, as of today, more than 5 1/2 years ago). The school was started by Emmanuel Waddy who started practicing jujitsu about a decade before opening Madhouse BJJ.

Madhouse BJJ expanded to what they refer to as a satellite school, located in Wheatland. The description of the group page states that blue-belt Taran Whelchel wanted to bring BJJ to Wheatland. Taran now offers BJJ at Wheatland's Dance Wyoming, a place for "performing arts, martial arts and exercise class, as well as serving as a resource for the community [where birthdays and other events can be held]."

Madhouse BJJ announces grand opening at Frontier Mall

By the end of May 2024, coming soon signs could be seen at the soon-to-be Madhouse BJJ at Frontier Mall. Yesterday on August 2nd, Madhouse BJJ posted that they would be having a grand opening on Saturday, August 3rd at 5 PM to 7 PM. The announcement states that there will be free raffles for new uniforms and t-shirts, and also free training.

A previous post from July 7th states that classes will start on Monday, August 5th. Another post from July 2nd states that the new Frontier Mall Madhouse is their third Cheyenne location. The location will include both kids and adult classes, and enrollment began on July 2nd. They also have a Facebook event set up that includes information on the grand opening and open house at the Frontier Mall location.

The event page states that kids can have unlimited classes for $100 per month, and adults can have unlimited classes at $130 per month. Adults can get a 10% military discount. Days and hours vary, but the event page states that kids classes occur Monday to Thursday at 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM, along with Friday at 5 PM; adult classes occur Monday to Friday at 9:30 AM, Monday to Thursday at 6:30 PM, and Friday at 6 PM.

As of the evening of August 2nd, one could see that signage had been installed on their storefront inside the mall, and the interior was clearly furnished for their classes.

What are your thoughts of Madhouse BJJ opening up at the Frontier Mall? What other tenants would you like to see open at other spaces inside the Frontier Mall?
