Cheyenne's Absolute Flooring has closed

Absolute Flooring, former Carpet Works, has recently closed. - Optopolis

It appears Cheyenne's Absolute Flooring store, located in the Cheyenne Plaza near North College Drive and East Lincolnway, has closed. The signage is down, and the inside of the store is empty... well, except for Spirit Halloween supplies.

A look at the history

Cheyenne city directories from the years 1990 and 1994 display "Old America Store" at this location. The 1995 directory, however, lists Carpet Works as present inside one of the two suites that, at the time, now made up this larger space; the directory lists Carpet Works in space G2 and Sav-On in space G. On the contrary, Carpet Works filed with the state in April 1992. Carpet Works continued to operate until around the start of the 2010s.

In a save from 2017 on the Wayback Machine, Absolute Flooring's website states that the business was established on October 1, 2011 by Lee and Nani Goepfert. The website says that Absolute Flooring was formed shortly after Carpet Works closed, and it also notes that Lee and Nani had both worked for Carpet Works in some form or another.

The Laramie County Property Assessor notes that this portion of the Cheyenne Plaza was built in 1981. This appears to be relatively accurate; satellite view from Historic Aerials displays a freshly graded plot of land in the vicinity of Cheyenne Plaza, seen in 1980. It's not clear at this time here at Optopolis what tenant was the earliest to locate in this space due to various drastic change(s) in the addresses in the area throughout the 80s.

Optopolis' discovery of apparent closure of Absolute Flooring

When passing through the area on July 19th, 2024, it was discovered here at Optopolis that Absolute Flooring had closed. The signage had been taken down, the open sign was turned off, and the interior was empty besides a few fixtures like fans and lights that lined the ceiling.

Unfortunately, it's not clear to Optopolis at this time exactly when this closure took place. The last time it was photographed as open here at Optopolis was in mid October of 2023, at which point they had a sign in their window that said, "This is not Party America," and an arrow on the sign pointed toward Party America's front entry.

This signage wasn't a new phenomenon, as Absolute Flooring had a similar sign present for the duration of Sears Hometown's life as a tenant next door. The Better Business Bureau states that Absolute Flooring was in business for twelve years. Taking a deeper look into it, it appears "Lee" is a nickname. What appears to be one of Mr. Goepfert's social media pages indicates that he "Works at Retired."

Absolute Flooring's state business filing hasn't gone inactive as of August 1st, 2024. The Business Entity Detail page notes that the name "Absolute Flooring" was initially filed on August 30th, 2011. The Google Maps listing for Absolute Flooring lists the business as "Permanently closed."

Spirit Halloween is the next tenant

As was discussed in a recent article that was published on July 31st but rewritten on August 4th to include more accurate information, Spirit Halloween is set to occupy this space for the 2024 Halloween season. Since July 29th, Spirit Halloween's black temporary walls were moved from the former Big Lots and into the former Absolute Flooring.

The word on the street is that Spirit Halloween was looking at a different space for the 2024 Halloween season, but things didn't work out that way, leading them to ultimately choose to occupy the former Absolute Flooring space for this season. Spirit Halloween's store locator currently states that the location will open in August, although the exact date isn't currently known here at Optopolis.

In some ways, it can be unfortunate to see a local business close. How do you feel about Absolute Flooring closing? What would you like to see take over the space--besides Spirit Halloween? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
