Cheyenne's Frontier Mall is set to get a new ice cream shop called Michoacan a Pedir de Boca, a chain ice cream shop with locations in the United States and Mexico!

A glance at the space's history at the Frontier Mall

The space where this new Mexican ice cream shop is setting up its storefront was, as many may recall, a Subway sandwich shop in the 2000s... although Subway certainly didn't always have a location in the Frontier Mall. In more recent years, multiple cafes have operated out of the space including The Galaxy Cafe (could be seen in 2018) and The Enchanted Bean (could be seen in 2019 and early 2020).

Another cafe occupied space #24 at the Frontier Mall in more recent years, but it closed sometime over the last year or so (pre-2024). It wasn't clear what was going to happen to the space until quite recently!

Michoacan a Pedir de Boca announced and a glance at its history

Wyoming Tribune Eagle's recent article announcing upcoming tenants at the Frontier Mall includes a shop called Michoacan a Pedir de Boca, a Mexican-themed ice cream shop. It turns out that Michoacan a Pedir de Boca is connected to a brand called La Michoacana Plus which operates locations mainly in the United States. However, as noted by EL CEO, La Michoacana Plus is a variant of the Mexico brand, La Michoacana.

According to Spanish Dictionary, the phrase "a pedir de boca" means "to ask by mouth," or 'to order by mouth.' As Michael Foth shared in an article on Mix 97.1, Michoacán is a state in Mexico; more specifically, the state is located along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. An archived page from UMSNH's website notes that the state's name, Michoacán, comes from a Nahuatl word that means the 'place of fishermen.'

EL CEO states that the foundation of La Michoacana dates back to the 1930s and is attributed to Rafael Malvafón, a man in Tocumbo, Michoacán although La Michoacana's website states that 'the first La Michoacana palletry opened in Mexico City on the side of the Palace of Lecumberri.' EL CEO mentioned that the name La Michoacana belongs to Eleuterio Oseguera Mendoza--at least, according to IMPI records.

According to La Michoacana, a new project was started in 2016 called Michoacan a Pedir de Boca. In regard to the United States, EL CEO's May 2023 article mentions that La Michoacana Plus 'maintains about 66 branches in various parts of the United States, mainly in California, Arizona, and Texas.'

Three locations have opened in Montana including two locations in Billings and a location in Bozeman. Although at least one location doesn't currently appear to be listed, La Michoacana's website indicates that they have presence in at least twelve US states also including New York, Illinois, and Tennessee.

What'll be on the menu at Michoacan a Pedir de Boca? When will it open?

Although it's not yet clear here at Optopolis exactly what foods and ice cream flavors will be on the menu at the Cheyenne shop, the Michoacan a Pedir de Boca website for the two Bozeman locations displays a menu of hot and cold foods, ice cream, and popsicles.

Foods at the two Bozeman locations include nachos, churros, street corn, and tamales. Ice cream flavors include some flavors common in the US such as Rocky Road or Chocolate, in addition to flavors like Horchata which you'd likely expect to find in Mexico. The Bozeman locations' menu even includes an Horchata-flavored popsicle!

A self-standing coming soon sign can already be seen inside the gate of the new Cheyenne Michoacan a Pedir de Boca. Wyoming Tribune Eagle stated that the new ice cream shop (which is located next to the old theater) plans to open in Spring 2024. As of April 9th, the Cheyenne location has not yet opened.

How to pronounce the name + an update Apr 25

At least some out there seem interested in how to pronounce this chain's name, so below is an embedded  video that will explain how to pronounce the name.

As of the evening of April 24th (as seen in some photos featured in the video above), things are progressing on the space; work was actively taking place to prepare the space for the new ice cream shop!
