Things happening at the Supply Sgt on Ridge

Vehicle drives by The Supply Sergeant as demolition takes place - Optopolis

As of lately, many things have been happening in the area of Ridge Rd and E Pershing Blvd; perhaps one of the bigger things that's happened is the demolition of the old The Supply Sergeant building.

A glance at the history and recent events

Early years

The Supply Sergeant dates back to over a century ago. According to the Property Assessor, the oldest building still standing on the property (at least, as of before April 2023) was the store building that housed Cheyenne's The Supply Sergeant, noted with the build date of 1920.

Most of the other buildings were built in the 50s aside from a couple outliers, including the Cheyenne Stitch building (which has a noted build date of 1965) on the corner of Charles St and Ridge Rd. All of this was built before Ridge Rd was even paved; there's even an image on Google Maps from way back when Ridge Rd was still dirt.

Liquidation and a fire

By July 2021, the store had started the process of closing and liquidating. At the beginning of September 2021 when the store was still in the process of liquidating, the unexpected happened. At around 5 AM (outside of store hours), fire crews were dispatched to a structure fire at the 3400 block of Ridge Rd.

Photos and video released after the incident revealed that someone had thrown a blunt object through one of the front windows of The Supply Sergeant building, dumped a liquid through the broken window, and then lit the place on fire.

The Supply Sergeant later continued liquidating other remaining supplies in the old Cheyenne Stitch building, having the final day of the store around the start of May 2022.

Annexation/Rezoning

In January 2023, an application was initiated by the City Development Office to annex several parcels of land in the vicinity of Ridge Rd and Cheyenne St into the city, including both parcels owned by The Supply Sergeant. The annexation would convert said parcels from County Mixed Use into City Community Business (although the plan was later altered to change the land into City Mixed Use Business).

Demolition and for sale

On March 21st, 2023, permits were submitted to the Laramie County Planning Website for demolition of the old The Supply Sergeant building. Only days later on March 30th, 2023, The Supply Sergeant building was being demolished.

As of the day of posting (March 3rd), both of The Supply Sergeant parcels are still listed for sale. According to Cheyenne Homes as well as various other listing websites, the larger parcel (between Charles St and Cheyenne St) is currently going for 2.925 million dollars; the smaller parcel (south of Cheyenne St) is going for 1.498 million dollars.

Also, remaining debris is being picked up and hauled off of the property. At this time, it doesn't appear any of the other major structures (the house, the old Cheyenne Stitch building, and the Cheyenne Stamp Works building) are set to be demolished.

Now for the big question: What would you like to see happen on the two parcels of land? A new neighborhood store or restaurant? A library or park? Apartments/Condos? Or a mixture of these perhaps...? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
