Construction of the new facility officially started in November 2023. This is one of many Cheyenne-area projects that had taken years to take flight, and this one finally happened, allowing the replacement of the old facility near the Cheyenne Civic Center.

Car crash wasn't a result of alcohol usage.

According to Standby News who documented the scene of the accident, it was at approximately 11:30 PM MT on Saturday, July 19th that the driver of a grey, four-door passenger vehicle crashed into the metal fencing in front of the new Senior Center, damaging the retaining wall immediately in front of the building.

Standby News' video on YouTube reveals imagery of the passenger vehicle sitting on the sidewalk in front of the senior center with its front bumper resting beyond the edge of the sidewalk, being held in place in part by the retaining wall. Damaged bricks could be seen on the concrete patio below, surrounding picnic tables at the lower level of the Senior Center.

At this time, the exact cause of the crash isn't confirmed, but according to both Standby News and Your Wyoming Link, both of whom spoke to the Cheyenne Police Department, no alcohol consumption was associated with the crash. According to the Wyoming Link, however, the 18-year-old was charged with underage possession of nicotine and driving without a license.

Laramie County Senior Services acknowledged the mishap on their Facebook page, but stated that the activity center was not damaged and would still open at 8 AM on July 20th. According to Standby News, nobody was injured.

The aftermath at the center

In observations made by Optopolis on July 21st, the entire area of the crash site was barricaded by caution tape and cones. Next to the damaged retaining wall, a slap of concrete that held the bicycle lockup station in place was also displaced from the rest of the sidewalk and barricaded by caution tape.

Damaged bricks from the wall still appeared on the concrete below, surrounding the picnic tables. At least two visitors who exited the senior center could also be seen observing the damage during Optopolis' visit. It's not clear to Optopolis at this time when the damaged wall and concrete will be repaired. However, if you are cycling to this location, you may want to find some other way of storing and/or locking your bike until the danger zone is repaired and reopened.

...And life goes on, ribbon cutting is scheduled

In spite of this recent development, Laramie County Senior Services is continuing to offer their senior service. The Red Carpet Committee and Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce are scheduled to hold a ribbon cutting at 10 AM on Thursday, August 14th.
