In addition to using the space they occupied last year, Spirit Halloween is now planning to open in a second vacancy along the Dell Range corridor!

Glance at Spirit's history in Cheyenne and as a whole

For those unaware, Spirit Halloween is a seasonal/Halloween pop-up chain store that typically opens up shop in former retail spaces such as Sears, Toys R Us, and Bed Bath and Beyond (although they have been known to occasionally set up in a large tent). As noted on Business Insider, Spirit Halloween was founded in 1983.

Spencer's Gifts (a store which has a location in Cheyenne's Frontier Mall) acquired Spirit Halloween in 1999. Since this time, Spirit Halloween has expanded to include locations in both the United States and Canada, operating at over 1,400 locations as explained by Hanold Associates.

Here in Cheyenne, Spirit Halloween has been opening locations since at least the 2010s. Locations here in Cheyenne include...

  • 2011 in the former Hollywood Video on Converse between Pershing and 19th,
  • 2017 in the former Sports Authority at the Frontier Mall,
  • 2018 at the former Sears in the Frontier Mall,
  • 2019 and 2020 inside Kmart on Dell Range Blvd, and
  • 2021 and 2022 inside the old Big Lots on E Lincolnway.

Spirit has also had locations in many cities surrounding Cheyenne in years past including Laramie and Casper in Wyoming; and Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Longmont, Boulder, and others in Colorado.

Spirit Halloween officially lists two Cheyenne locations for 2023

Perhaps the obvious one, Spirit Halloween has already been actively setting up shop in the former Big Lots on E Lincolnway, even before the Spirit Halloween locations list for Cheyenne (2023) went live.

However, sometime between the 24th and 25th of July 2023, a new Cheyenne location was added in addition to the former Big Lots. If you've been keeping up with the latest on chain stores that have closed this year, you already have a huge clue as to where this new one will be.

As reported here at Optopolis, Cheyenne's Bed Bath and Beyond had closed earlier this year. It started closing in early February very discretely although it was later added to the official list of closures. Bed Bath and Beyond announced in the morning of Sunday, April 23rd that they would be filing for bankruptcy, and the same day, the Cheyenne store closed.

The former Bed Bath and Beyond location does not yet display an opening date, Google does not yet display a marker for the location, and the space still appears as the former Bed Bath and Beyond. On the other hand, the former Big Lots location is expected to open in August according to both Spirit Halloween and Google Maps, and banners are already posted in the windows of the location.

Update 08/02 - Opening date of Lincolnway location now known

A pass by the former Big Lots space on E Lincolnway next to Sportsmans Warehouse revealed signs (including the one below) posted posted in the windows. They all say that the store will open on Thursday, August 3, 2023.

Update 08/07 - The Lincolnway store is open!

The store indeed did open on August 3rd, and it currently is open. Their hours are as follows:

I hope the new location for B&N is temporary and they take the bed bath and beyond space. I don't feel like the current one is good long term as it's fairly small for how B&N usually is. They'd have more space in the other store.

Initially, I almost thought maybe they would do that from the get go but obviously not the plan for now. An interesting idea I have may be to eventually move the book store part into the former BBB, then set up a cafe in the other part. Crazy Idea and no idea if it'd work nor if it'd be something they'd even be interested in doing.

Old Chicago closes Cheyenne restaurant!

Cheyenne's Old Chicago Pizza and Taproom permanently closed yesterday evening, at least an hour before their normal closing time of 10 PM on Sundays.
