Gills Point S (frmr Peerless Tires) abruptly closes Cheyenne location

CHEYENNE - Gills Point S Tire & Auto Service, formerly Peerless Tires, recently shuttered their Cheyenne garage located along East Lincolnway. Those wanting Gills' Service will either have to go somewhere else or visit another Gills Point S Location.

A glance at the history

The Laramie County Property Assessor indicates that this building was built in the early 1960s. The building drawing indicates that it has had multiple add-ons over the decades including two add-ons in 1984 (to the east and northwest) and a third add-on (to the north-northeast) in 2005. This explains in part why satellite imagery from Historic Aerials varies so much at this location when switching from 1980 to 1994.

Imagery from other years in Historic Aerial's archive also confirms that other places were present at this location before the Peerless building was built, and Cheyenne City Directories can help piece things together. The...

  • 1961 Cheyenne City Directory lists a gas station called Frontier Station at 1904 East Lincoln Highway.
  • 1967 Directory specifies that the gas station was, specifically, John's Frontier Station and displays the address at the corner of Logan Avenue, listed just above the Firebird Motel (still located across the street today);
  • 1970 Directory lists John's Husky Station at the same address;
  • 1985 Directory displays the address as vacant,
  • 1987 Directory lists Direct Sales Tire Co;
  • 1989 Directory lists Peerless Sales Tyre Co.

Throughout the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, the spelling of Peerless Tires (based on their building signage) was spelled with an "i" instead of a "y"--much unlike the way it was spelled in many Cheyenne directories including the 1989 directory, mentioned above. According to Modern Tire Dealer (MTD), Peerless Tyre Co. was most recently doing business as Peerless Tires 4 Less. There was a Peerless Tires located on Yellowstone Road, but many years ago, it closed and was later demolished.

In late 2024, Gills Point S acquired Peerless Tyre which, according to MTD, brought the chain to 121 locations; it was stated that Peerless Tires would soon be rebranded to the Gills Point S Tire & Auto Service name. In February 2025, permits were submitted to rebrand the Cheyenne Peerless to Gills Point S. A worker told Optopolis that it was only about four months ago when the rebrand actually occurred.

MTD's Joy Kopcha reported in late 2024 that as of 2020, "Gills Point S Tire & Auto was a family-owned business based in Oregon with 17 stores." In that four-year time frame, Gills Point S quadrupled its size, adding locations all across the country. About a year before the Peerless Tires acquisition, Gills Point S acquired Budget Tire and Hogan Tire Co, both smaller businesses with only five locations each.

A now-offline web page dated Sep. 13, 2025 (still indexed in some search engines including Duck Duck Go) displays the header, "Cheyenne Grand Re-Opening Sale;" additional sale information doesn't appear in the website description, but the description does state that Point S was at over 135 service centers across 17 states.

Gills Point S Tire & Auto closes Cheyenne garage

On October 20th, an apparent Cheyenne resident told Optopolis via Facebook that Gills Point S, just that day, had taken down all their signage around the building. The Facebook user told Optopolis that they were in the garage during the week before to get tire work done.

Optopolis passed by the location on October 21st and discovered a sign in the window of the main pedestrian entry that indicated, "this location is closed." The large self-standing sign appeared to have been painted black, and most if not all the signage on the building appeared to have already been taken down. The web page for the Cheyenne location (seen archived here) now returns an error saying, "Page Not Found."

The Point S service centers locator indicates that the nearest locations to Cheyenne include but aren't limited to Laramie WY, Loveland CO, Evans CO, Longmont CO, Gering NE, and Brighton CO, all listed as "formerly Peerless Tires."

Some of the other places in Cheyenne that do tire work include but aren't limited to Big O Tires, D&K Tire & Service, Discount Tire, Fat Boys, Le Schwab, On the Spot Mobile Tires and Service (only the mobile truck), and Tom The Tireman.
