CHEYENNE - The former Action Automotive building on South Greeley Highway at East College Drive is scheduled to be demolished and replaced by Les Schwab Tires. This will be their second Cheyenne-area location.

A look at the history (including Action Automotive)

The Laramie County Property Assessor GIS map indicates that the Action Automotive building was built at the turn of the 1960s. This was approximately four years after a storage warehouse was also built on the property. Two quonsets were later built, one in 1982 and one in 1995; a light commercial utility building that includes a garage door was built in 1979, also on the property. In the property assessor, the vacant parcel immediately east of the Action Automotive building appears to still use the name, Action Automotive Inc.

A detailed history of the lot isn't currently known by Optopolis, but Cheyenne City Directories indicate that Action Automotive dates back at least to 1990. Optopolis doesn't yet know of an exact closure date for Action Automotive, but Google Maps Streetview from June 2012 displays junk cars still being stored on Action Automotive's property; by May 2018 based on then-provided Google Maps Street View, the cars had been removed.

The parcel's data listed in the Laramie County Projects website indicates that, as soon as 2012, there was a site plan permit for a business called Thrifty's Thrift Store. In 2014, there was a site plan permit issued for another business called Trible J Auto. In 2016, a temporary use permit was submitted for a business called Fletch's Franks, but the use was discontinued 12/13/16. In late 2024, one permit was submitted for commercial demolition, but it doesn't list an issue date, and the permit has since expired.

Video footage captured by Optopolis in late 2019 confirms that the Action Automotive building was no longer in use at the time. Weeds were growing in front of the public entry into the building, and the interior appeared to be mostly emptied of furnishings. The building has mostly if not entirely continued to sit vacant throughout recent years.

Demolition is about to take place

The new Laramie County Projects website includes five commercial demolition permits that were submitted in mid-July 2025 and issued on July 31st, indicating that all five buildings discussed above are anticipated to be demolished.

Within the last few weeks, the main building along South Greeley Highway was barricaded with fencing which can be seen in the photos displayed above.

Les Schwab to build second Cheyenne-area store

Site Plan, permit PZ-24-00102, indicates that Les Schwab, a car tire care center, is planned to be built on this lot. A file containing the project's site photometric plan indicates that there will be two access points into their lot, one on South Greeley Highway and one on East College Drive--in addition to pedestrian access from College Drive.

The longer-edge of the building will be roughly parallel to South Greeley Highway. There appear to be seven bay doors planned, compared to the Dell Range location that only has six bay doors. Currently, the location doesn't yet appear to be listed in Les Schwab's store directory for Wyoming; the county projects website indicates that a certificate of review was issued but hasn't yet been approved.
