CHEYENNE - Cheyenne's local candy shop called Bourbon Street Candy Co. has made the decision to close their Frontier Mall store after more than 25 years in operation.

A glance at the history

In mid-2024, it was reported here on Optopolis that Bourbon Street Candy Co. would be moving from next to Planet Fitness and relocating next door to the former Union Wireless space. The candy shop celebrated their 25th-year anniversary, celebrating the occasion on August 3rd, 2024.

Further location history was shared in the previous Optopolis article, but something that wasn't detailed much was revolving around the ownership. The Wyoming Business Center website indicates that Bourbon Street Candy Co. was originally filed on March 31st, 1999 and went inactive on March 31st, 2009. The applicant for the business filing was Candy, Inc., by George Saurwein.

Although an exact date isn't known at Optopolis at the moment, it appears that the ownership of the shop changed around the turn of the 2010s. For the last few years, Chris Garcia and his family have been running the candy shop.

When they moved to the most-recent location (former Union Wireless), they initially tried a different take on the branding of the shop but ultimately reverted to the yellow-text-on-candy-red sign, as seen above in late 2024.

In recent years, Bourbon Street even made appearances at some vendor shows including last year's Cowboy Christmas Market which took place at the Archer Complex, located on the east side of Cheyenne.

Bourbon Street Candy Co. shutters their mall location

Recently, there has been some rumor and speculation of the shop considering closing their doors at the end of their lease term this year. To some extent, perhaps, this is no surprise, given that in recent times, the shop has been a bit quiet at times, even during busier traffic periods at the Frontier Mall.

In a visit to Frontier Mall made by Optopolis on May 6th, the storefront that once housed Bourbon Street Candy Co. was discovered to be darkened and empty. The sign had been taken down, and the gate blocked the entryway. In a previous visit on May 1st, the shop was observed by Optopolis to still be in operation but didn't appear to have much (if any) fudge in their display case. Communication with various mall walkers further confirms that the shop closed around or before the first weekend of May 2025.

Those who know about Bourbon Street Candy Co. know that while it is a candy shop, they also put emphasis on their fudge. Even at their original location under the previous ownership, the shop would often have a large banner advertising Fresh Fudge. Late last year, they even had what are called "Dubai Bars" available, a treat that was reportedly going viral on a social media app known as TikTok.

Chris and his family ultimately decided that running the shop just wasn't sustainable anymore given their circumstances. When asked if they'd try something different in the future, Bourbon Street Candy Co. told Optopolis that--for now--they are taking a break but may try something different in the future. However, whether that means Bourbon Street may make a comeback in some way, that is yet to be determined and is not clear to Optopolis at this time.

The space is labeled as 'for lease'

By May 14th, signs had been placed in the front of the store to indicate that the space is now for lease. It's not clear to Optopolis what may come to this space in the future.

Now let us know what you think...

Now that Bourbon Street Candy Co. is closed, where will you be going for your candy fix? And, what would you like to see come to the now-vacant Union Wireless/Bourbon Street space?

  1. I hope they do make a comeback!
    1. The way they put it in our communication, it's definitely open ended. Could come back or it might not. Time will tell.
